Local Conservatives shocked at “spineless” R4U U-turn
Conservatives at Uttlesford District Council have today joined in collective shock from all three major political parties in the District at the attempted cover-up by Residents For Uttlesford off the back of the Stansted Appeal hearings.
Just yesterday, the R4U administration announced that it would look to lean on the Government’s inclusion of aviation within the carbon reduction targets to fend off Stansted’s plans to intensify their operations.
Councillor Chris Criscione, Leader of the Conservatives at Uttlesford, commented: “The Planning Committee had the rug pulled from under them by R4U when they voted unanimously to refuse Stansted’s latest application, because the R4U-run Council chose not to defend their stance at appeal. The spineless R4U administration has failed to defend the decision, to use residents' hard earned council tax money wisely, and to be open and transparent about their actions.”
Stansted Airport’s owner, Manchester Airports Group, have submitted an application for costs against Uttlesford for their poor handling of the appeal, and many Uttlesford District Councillors from across all parties have noted their frustration at the Council’s response.
Councillor Criscione continued: “Regardless of whether they supported the Planning Committee’s decision or not, residents will be extremely concerned that R4U seem to be leading the Council down a very costly runway without the commitment to take off. When democratic decisions are made, the Council should seek to uphold them at appeals or when challenged, but here, it seems there was never any desire to do so and it's residents that will foot the bill.”
A decision is expected late summer 2021.
